David* joined the St Vincent’s Open Support Community Connections program in April 2025 after many years of living with anxiety and depression, alongside difficult family relationships, ongoing back pain and stress. Following a significant financial scam that cost him most of his savings and the breakdown of close relationships, David reached a very difficult point and experienced deep social isolation.
Seeking support, he connected with St Vincent’s Community Mental Health service and was referred to the Open Support Community Connections program – a free service that helps people from all backgrounds overcome social isolation through one-on-one support, group activities and practical guidance to build confidence and wellbeing.
With one-on-one support from a Community Connector counsellor, David slowly rebuilt his confidence. He explored a range of group activities and now regularly attends a weekly social group, where he has made meaningful connections. While he occasionally joins the Men’s Group, he feels most comfortable connecting with people one-on-one.
David will soon begin weekly phone support with an Open Support Community Connections volunteer and says he is very grateful for the help he has received. He reflects that reconnecting with others in his local community has been a key part of his recovery and says he is now feeling much more positive and proactive after a long period of isolation.
