Carol* arrived in Australia from overseas with her husband and four-year-old son, who is living with a disability. After experiencing domestic violence, she and her son were safely supported to leave the family home, with police helping to ensure their protection.
As Carol was on a temporary visa, she and her son were only eligible to access short-term emergency accommodation. Fortunately, we had a vacancy at the Cottage, a crisis accommodation service operated by St Vincent’s Open Support, where they were able to stay safely.
From there, Open Support worked alongside Carol as she rebuilt her life in Australia. She received ongoing help with her immigration process to secure a permanent visa, along with court support, counselling, and health checks for both her and her son. Her son was also supported with a successful NDIS application to help with his ongoing needs.
Carol and her son later moved into a private rental, with St Vincent’s Open Support helping with the bond and part of the rent for six months. Once her visa became permanent, Carol was supported to access the NSW Government Rent Choice Start Safely program, which helps with rent for up to three years.
Today, Carol and her son are safe, happy and settled in their new home.
